Is it good or is it bad? by Nancy Fox

A number of years ago, a colleague of mine lost his dream job.

He was devastated because he loved this job, but his industry is diminishing and he is in that age range where jobs are more and more difficult to land. It's been 3 years - since then, he's gotten a job, lost a job, and is still in the search. He's a brilliant, talented, skilled guy and he cannot get away from the notion that the only option for him is a JOB. He thinks it's tragic that he lost his job.

A friend of mine went through a devastating and surprising illness this year. She is one of the smartest, most dynamic business people I know and this experience completely rocked her world as well as her family's, her company's and her clients'. She also is one of the hardest working people, but she hasn't been back to work in months, and it may yet be awhile 'til she goes back.

Very often, just when things seem to be going just right, something devastating happens. A job loss, an illness, a business downturn, a marriage ending, a parent or partner becoming ill.

For me, the two most devastating things that happened were being diagnosed with breast cancer and losing my job, all on the same day!

Yes, in the same day.

But here's what I have learned: very often it's my worst experiences that forced me to grow into new opportunities. If I hadn't HAD to experience them, I never would have stretched into new growth.

What I saw as BAD was actually quite GOOD for me. It led me to a new rewarding career and skills I never would have developed. And today I love the life I have created.

I am not saying I am happy I had cancer. I am saying that going through such an experience did good things for my growth and development both as a person and as a professional. I am so much more able to understand people and relate to them as a result of my "bad" life experiences.

Too many are out there bemoaning the bad news. Please stop. It's not helping you in growing your business.

The Chilean miners are an amazing example of people who were in a BAD BAD situation that allowed us to be inspired (that's GOOD) and see that GOOD can emerge from such a disaster. We have learned (and will learn alot more as the story unfolds) how determination and positive thinking can be life-saving. We can see how they used ingenuity to make a good experience out of this horrible situation. And I bet that the book or books that will be written will very likely help them and others in ways we cannot yet imagine.

So, ask yourself: what am I seeing that looks bad that actually might be good if I look at it from a different angle?

How can I use this shift in perspective in my business? In my life?

A farmer who had just acquired a stallion came to the Zen Master in distress, saying, "Master, the horse is gone, the horse is gone!" for the stallion had run away.

The Zen Master replied, "Who knows if it is good or bad?"

The farmer returned to his work feeling sad and miserable.

Two days later, the stallion returned and brought with him two mares.

The farmer was overjoyed and he went to the Zen Master saying, 'Master, the horse is back and has brought two others with him."

The Master replied, "Who knows if it is good or bad?"

Three days later, the farmer was back again, crying because his only son, his only helper on the farm, had been thrown from one of the horses and his back had been broken. He was now in a body cast and could do no work. The Zen Master again replied, "Who knows if it is good or bad?"

A few days later, a group of soldiers came to the farm as they were drafting all the young men in the area to fight in a war. Since the farmer's son was in a body cast they did not take him

Who knows if it is good or bad?

The choice is yours.
