Judy Mills believes that education does not guarantee success; there is another driving force behind achievement…
I have long entertained the notion that education does not necessarily result in wise individuals
It has been proven in psychological circles that education will not guarantee ‘success’. There has to be another driving force that elevates one to achieving goals.
To prove my point, let us look at some interesting people
Tony Factor, a leading entrepreneur in South African business context, was dyslexic and did not finish school. He became a leading furniture retailer.
Walter Sisulu attended a missionary school and left at the tender age of 14, but went on to become a great leader.
Moving further afield, Sir Richard Branson left school at the age of 16 to devote his time to writing a magazine, from then on he has moved boundaries, shifted the accepted norms to become one of the wealthiest men in Britain notwithstanding the fact that riches were never his aim!
Albert Einstein barely made it through high school and his command of language was so bad that his parents thought him to be of below average intelligence.
So, what exactly am I getting at here?
“It is possible to store the mind with a million facts and still be entirely uneducated,” Alec Bourne
The point that I am trying to make, is that society gives ‘points’ to those that have completed university degrees, we elevate graduates and tend to think of them as a cut-above-the-rest.
We pay university graduates higher salaries and give them better rates at banks
Let me not negate the importance of higher learning nor for one minute minimise the effort and dedication that is invested in attaining the degree/masters/doctorates and professorships.
I want to take your mind out from underneath the rock under which we hide to show you the individuals that have made a difference simply by pursuing their passions or using their talents.
Education does not teach common sense, but will teach you about flow-charts
Do psychologists and psychiatrists learn the power of compassion and empathy?
Do accountants who balance books so well know how to balance work and pleasure? Do computer experts programme their lives as well as they do the systems they work on? Do mechanics tune themselves into the needs of their friends and family?
Do quantity surveyors know how many building bricks and cement it takes to build a worthy self-esteem?
Do theologians learn how to be non-judgemental and loving of every creature and creed? Do artists look and admire the beauty that surrounds them in every moment? Can musicians appreciate a little five year-old’s voice singing at the bottom of the garden?
Do veterinary surgeons see the beautiful spirits within their sick patients? Are nurses and doctors saving lives, whilst they risk losing their own souls?
Do we, as ‘educated’ people live within the little box that society has given us and think that we have learned everything our education has taught us?
Have we accepted the theories that the ‘great minds’, the ‘pioneers’ within our fields of study as the absolute truth? Do we just run with the wolves because we like being in the pack or have we found our own little niche that makes us just that more effective and productive?
We all need to invest in our own education
The lessons present themselves in situations every day and it is up to each individual to passionately take every opportunity to live, love and learn.
In my own life, I can honestly say that it is not what I have studied but what I have learned that has made me who I am.
Fact: something that can be shown to be true, to exist or to have happened
Thinking about thinking about thoughts, but which one should I choose to think about? I wonder if it is possible to have no thoughts outside of meditation? How about doing some thinking in a positive manner this weekend?
