The best any of us can do is to choose wisely when embarking upon tertiary education, as it’s all about being sensible, and responsible.
Sometimes pressure is brought to bear from outside sources that almost take our own decision-making power out of the equation, e.g. if parents insist their children follow a particular career path and insist they choose a particular subject to study. The same is true regarding the institution at which one is to study. This is tough – when our personal power is temporarily taken from us – but even in that instance the best we can do is to choose wisely within the parameters of whatever has been imposed on us. Do any of you remember the book and the movie Dead Poet’s Society? I loved it, and it always brings a chill when I recall what happened to one of the students who had such pressure imposed on him. Not good.
But if one has more freedom of choice about which line of study to pursue, it is important to think seriously before deciding, even if you only have a basic idea – will it be some sort of accounting study or psychology or drama - and then choose wisely within that.
