Get-this-Now: Wellness tip 3/12: You are what you absorb

Have the special festive season food, no problem, and remember that "You are what you absorb"

Eat colourful fruits and vegetables each day. They generally have no preservatives or added colour; and provide an abundance of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, fibre, water and trace elements. They are usually visually appetizing, and have high water content (and are an excellent source of hydration).

Your body converts carbohydrates into sugar, which you need for energy, but not all carbs are "equal" - some turn into too much sugar, too fast and with too many calories. To identify which are good for you, and which to avoid, check their "glycemic index" rating.

Foods with a high glycemic index convert into sugar rapidly, causing blood sugar fluctuations, mood swings and weight gain. Foods with a low glycemic index turn into sugar gradually, releasing their energy steadily, and help you avoid undesirable peaks and troughs. Foods with medium and low carbs are better choices for you.

Some carbs listed according to high, medium and low-glycemic index:

High glycemic index - raisins, bagel, whole grain bread, cereals, corn, granola, bran muffin, pasta, potatoes, pretzels, rice, wheat tortilla.

Medium glycemic index - cantaloupe, watermelon, peas, apricots, oatmeal, soy beans, chickpeas, pita bread, sweet & new potatoes, pumpkin.

Low glycemic index - apple, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cherries, cucumber, grapefruit, kiwi, lettuce, peach, spinach, zucchini, lentils

Avoid cooking the nutrients and enzymes right out of your foods - you may as well be eating cardboard for all the good it does your body J The effectiveness of fibre in cooked foods in reduced, and passes through your body with reduced "cleansing" action. Rather steam your vegetables, and take your time chewing and savouring what you consume. (Source Today mag)
