Dejunk your life and your body, contd Part II
Where is the junk? Kitchen - processed, tinned, dried and frozen foods: check all the "best before" dates. Old pots and pans, crockery and cutlery, chipped mugs and cups, blunt knives that are beyond repair, musty rubber gloves - it's all junk. Bathroom - that collection of half-filled shampoo bottles, frayed old towels and tired bed linen - it can all go. Garden/shed/backyard - the broken wheelbarrow, old seed packets and discoloured plastics pots - say goodbye! Cupboards, drawers, under the beds, behind the doors, behind furniture - places where junk hides. Find it and let it go. Wardrobes - if you haven't worn it for two, three years, it's "junk" Your work/office space - out of date manuals, catalogues and books, old customer files, dusty desk ornaments and pens that don't work - out! Garage - probably the most neglected area: pots of dry paint, bits of wood, broken tools, old garden furniture. Think of all the extra space you'll gain. The attic/cellar/cupboard under the stairs - when you've completed the rest of the house, you should be feeling confident and strong enough to tackle the attic where the most sentimental junk usually resides. It's decision time so be tough and let it go.
How do you start? This is a life-changing event so plan ahead - it could take a day, a week, a month. Don't let anything distract you from this work which is also very therapeutic. Make sure that you are in the right frame of mind, feeling fit and well, focused and decisive - you're going to be making some difficult decisions, and sometimes you will have to be ruthless. Collect plenty of strong boxes and bags - you'll need more than you think. Clear some floor space and ideally get four boxes ready, name them destroy, find a new home, recycle, not sure yet. Work your way around your home methodically, one room, one area at a time. Start in the area that irritates you the most :) Finally, make sure all that junk actually leaves your property and doesn't just get moved to another part of your home waiting to be moved in the distant future.
